A First-Person Account of a Botched Migration, Lost Data, and a Driver’s License Still in Their System
This didn’t happen to me yesterday. It happened years ago. But I have the screenshots to prove it.
A few years back, I applied to RemoTasks. I was looking for flexible remote work, and the platform seemed legitimate. I did everything they asked:
- Submitted my driver’s license
- Entered my payment information (PayPal or bank account—honestly, I cannot remember which)
- Completed the assessment
- Filled out my personal details
I passed. They told me I would be assigned a project. I was ready to work.
Then everything fell apart.
The Migration That Wasn’t
Shortly after passing the assessment, I lost access to RemoTasks. When I tried to log in, I was greeted with a message stating that my account had been migrated to a new platform called Outlier.
I do not remember the exact wording from years ago. What I remember is being told to go to Outlier—and then not being able to get in.
I followed the instructions. The new platform did not work. There were no instructions on what to do next. No welcome email. No explanation. Just a screen that looked broken or incomplete.
I checked back. Nothing. I checked again. Still nothing.
Eventually, I moved on. I assumed the opportunity had evaporated and my time had been wasted.
What I Know Now
When I recently tried to log into the old RemoTasks platform, I received this message:
{"status_code":422,"error":"We've migrated your account to our new platform, Outlier. Please log in at https://app.outlier.ai/login to access your account."}
This is likely the same message—or a version of it—that appeared years ago. Whether the exact formatting has changed, the meaning is clear: my account was moved, and I was directed to Outlier.
I later learned that Outlier.ai (the version owned by Scale AI) launched in 2023. RemoTasks was the original platform, focused on computer vision and autonomous driving data labeling . Scale AI decided to consolidate everything onto a new platform and began migrating existing workers .
The migration was intentional. But the execution was a mess.
I was not alone. A Glassdoor reviewer described almost the exact same experience:
“I started working at Remotasks around August 2023. In the beginning, it wasn’t bad. When they migrated to the new platform (Outlier), things turned sour. We had to restart from scratch, even those of us who were experienced taskers.”
Others on Reddit confirmed that the migration was part of a larger plan to phase out RemoTasks and move everyone to Outlier .
But for me—and apparently for many others—the move did not go smoothly.
Years Later, I Decided to Log Back In
Recently, I decided to see what had happened to my account. I went to app.outlier.ai and logged in.
This time, the platform worked. But instead of a dashboard where I could start working, I was greeted with this:
| Step | Time (Estimate) |
|---|---|
| Create Account | 1 minute |
| Account Verification | 1 minute |
| Identity Verification | 3 minutes |
| Resume Upload | 1 minute |
| Experience | 1 minute |
| Assessment | 12 minutes |
| Join Community | 1 minute |
They wanted me to start over.
Two Screenshots That Tell the Whole Story
First, this is what I see when I try to log into the old RemoTasks platform today:
[Screenshot 1: 422 migration error message]

Then, this is what I see when I log into Outlier:
[Screenshot 2: Onboarding screen with all the steps]

The story writes itself:
- They migrated my account
- They told me to log in to Outlier
- I followed their instructions
- Outlier asked me to register from scratch
My driver’s license. My payment information. My assessment work. All submitted years ago. All apparently lost in the migration.
Now they want me to do it all over again.
What Happened to My Data?
The Outlier Privacy Policy states that verification data—including driver’s license images and selfies—is retained for “up to two years after your last interaction with the Services.”
My last interaction was the failed migration years ago. If their policy was followed, my data should have been deleted. So why are they asking for it again?
There are two possibilities:
- My data was deleted (as it should have been), and now they need it again
- My data was lost during the botched migration
Either way, the system did not work as intended. And somewhere in their system—or lost in the migration—is my personal information.
The Deeper Pattern
What I experienced is not a one-time technical glitch. It is a pattern:
| Stage | What Happened |
|---|---|
| 1. Apply | Submitted driver’s license, payment info, assessment work |
| 2. Pass | Told I would be assigned a project |
| 3. Migrate | Account moved to a new platform that did not work |
| 4. Ghost | No explanation, no access, no follow-up |
| 5. Return | Years later, platform works—but I am asked to start over |
The same platform that migrated my account now asks me to register as a new user. The same company that collected my driver’s license years ago now wants it again.
And in between? Silence.
What Others Have Said
I am not the only person who experienced this.
A Reddit user described the migration as part of a broader shift:
“Scale AI is the parent company of Remotasks and Outlier. Remotasks was the tasking platform they used before Outlier. They are migrating everything from Remotasks to Outlier.”
Another user noted that the migration was chaotic:
“When they migrated to the new platform (Outlier), things turned sour. We had to restart from scratch, even those of us who were experienced taskers. I had completed over 60 training sessions, with screenshots to prove it, but still rarely found work.”
A Reddit thread from January 2026 confirmed that Remotasks still exists, but Scale AI is actively moving users away from it .
The pattern is consistent: Scale AI built a new platform, tried to migrate existing workers, and the process was broken.
What You Should Know If You Are Considering Outlier or RemoTasks
If you are thinking about signing up for Outlier (or Remotasks), here is what I learned:
1. Your data may not follow you.
If they migrate platforms, your account information—including your ID and payment details—may be lost or reset. You may be asked to start over.
2. Unpaid assessments are not guaranteed to count.
I completed the assessment once. They lost it. They wanted me to do it again. That is unpaid labor that can disappear.
3. Biometric data is collected and retained.
The Privacy Policy explicitly states they collect selfies, voice recordings, and images of government-issued IDs. This data is retained for up to two years after your last interaction.
4. The migration was part of a planned transition.
Scale AI built Outlier in 2023 to replace Remotasks. They migrated existing accounts. The execution was flawed.
5. If you are migrated, you may lose access.
My account was moved to a platform that did not work. I had no way to access work, no instructions, and no support.
What I Did Next
I stopped the onboarding. I did not submit my driver’s license again. I did not complete the 12-minute assessment again. I did not give them my payment information again.
I have what I need: screenshots of the 422 error message and the new onboarding screen. Proof that the migration happened. Proof that Outlier wants me to start over.
My data is already out there. I am not going to give them more.
Final Thoughts
I applied to RemoTasks years ago. I passed the assessment. I was told I would work. Then I was migrated to a broken platform and ghosted.
Years later, I logged back in. The platform works now. But instead of finding my old account, I found a registration screen asking me to do it all again.
My driver’s license is still in their system—or was lost in the migration. Either way, the promise of a smooth transition was broken.
If you are considering Outlier or Remotasks, understand what you are signing up for. Your time, your data, and your unpaid assessment work may disappear in a migration. And you may be asked to start over from scratch.
I chose not to.
Key Takeaways
| Issue | What Happened |
|---|---|
| Migration | RemoTasks accounts were moved to Outlier in a planned transition |
| Broken platform | When I was migrated, Outlier did not work. No access. No instructions. |
| Data lost | Years later, Outlier asked me to register as a new user |
| Unpaid assessment | The assessment I completed years ago was not recognized |
| Biometric data | My driver’s license was submitted once. They want it again. |
